I am in practice with a primary care group in the East Bay, consisting of pediatricians and internists. I stopped performing infant circumcisions about 20 years ago when I realized that there is no medical indication for the procedure. I try to give parents accurate information about the function of the foreskin and encourage them to let their sons decide for themselves when they are adults instead of taking that choice away from them as babies. Some of my medical partners do and some do not perform circumcisions. None of us in my group actively promotes circumcision and we give appropriate advice about the care of the intact penis. I am concerned that the American Academy of Pediatrics has failed to make a strong statement against routine infant circumcision despite overwhelming evidence that it is not only not medically indicated but is also harmful.

Dr. Maynard in Livermore is very knowledgeable about intact foreskins, knows that there is no reason to ever retract, and knows that boys should be retractable sometime between now and when they become sexually active. He is also very breastfeeding-friendly, and respectful of other decisions, such as deciding not to vaccinate, though they are not his preference. He *does* perform circumcisions, but he does not push parents either way- just accepts what they want.
