A Special Kind of Boob

On the first day of World Breastfeeding Week (Aug 1) a dear friend sent me this picture of her little one nursing and pointed out that it takes a special kind of boob to nurse a toddler sitting beside you and facing the same direction... ;)

In celebration of all types of nursing mommas ~ and all their fabulous lactating, life-saving, life-sustaining breasts ~ small and large, puffy and flat, being used for the first time, or being used for the last time... Here's to you, you makers of milk!!

  1. "being used for the last time" that phrase breaks my heart, because I am nursing my last baby... I hope he hangs on for a long time.

  9. I love this! Before I had children I was worried about loosing the
perky-ness of my boobs once I did have a baby...now that I'm BFing baby #3...I think a boob like that would come in really handy:) It's funny how our priorities change once we become parents!

  17. I am so grateful to be surrounded in my life by people who have been supportive, encouraging, and fully understanding of the beauty that is breastfeeding your children. Without them, I may have actually stopped at 6mos, and not made it until 2.5 years with my son, or who knows how long with my daughter (now 13 mos).

  18. who the heck even flagged this on the Facebook page? that's lame, apparently people in this world can't handle non-pornographic breasts with children attached to them. it's not like all 44 comments were dirty! they were all supportive and reassuring. one day hopefully our society will be open enough to NOT flag such beautiful things.

  23. Heehee, I feed my 3 yr old that way. It is the only way I can keep my 9 month old from pulling her sister's hair when I feed them at the same time :D

  24. Cute picture, I love how she's holding the boobie!

  30. feeding in funky positions (and feeding in general) has given me a new appreciation for my big boobs which I used to consider a burden. But also that I think ALL boobs are wonderful, whatever their size and there are some positions that smaller breasts do much more easily than my big ones :) heck, I just ♥ boobies!

  31. All shapes and sizes of breasts are "normal" (someone had commented on how it was nice to see NORMAL breasts instead of always smaller perkier breasts) *wink, mine are small and still perfectly normal...not so perky, though! ha ha) and that our kiddos don't care what they look like anyway. ♥

  32. "being used for the last time" *snif* Mine would love to be used again!!

  33. Such a sweet photo...the most natural thing that child knows.

  34. We nursed like that a lot, too, my first and only-so-far... ANY way he could get the breast he would take it!

My heart revels in the unity of mothers and fathers and their fans, celebrating the everyday miracle of nursing. Newborns to toddlers and beyond, it's all naturally wonderful.

  35. I have prehensive boobs, too!

I can do the position in the photo, and also, the flat on my back with toddler (21 months) beside me on her side thing.

AND when we're sidelying, she often rolls until she's facing *away* from me (I'm "spooning" her), with her head on my breast, *still latched*

(Did I mention that, prior to pregnancy, I'd lost about 200 lbs?)

On the other hand, she's decided that the signs for "bra" and "breast" involve grabbing her armpit.

  36. After twins, I look like that too. Love all the pride you all share. You inspire me to be more proud of my "gelatinous puddle cakes".

  37. I'm nursing our first baby (3mos old. Actually he just went down for a nap a few minutes ago). But I always thought it weird that I had "two different sizes."

Now that I'm nursing, I prefer him to nurse on the larger side, lol! He likes to sit up straddling one leg and whip his head around to look at everything/one in the room while he nurses. He's such a busy boy! It's during these times that the "big num num" comes in really handy. It still hurts when he tries doing it with the smaller one, lol!
